There is an 800 page book that exhaustively traces the Van Benschoten family. This name eventually became VanScoter. “The descendants of Anthony have unfortunately fallen into the way of dropping the Ben and of using the name as Van Scoter.” (page 607)
The book was published in 1907. You can access it online for free. See here or here.
You can purchase a print copy here. I have a print copy.
My paternal grandmother Leota VanScoter, my great grandfather Frank Miles VanScoter, my great, great grandfather Meritt VanScoter, and my great, great, great grandfather Elias VanScoter are all in this book. Actually, it traces our line all the way back to the 1600’s. We are the Gerrit line of Theunis Eliasen.
Pages in the book:
Frank # 3219 (and Leota) … page 621
Frank and Merritt # 3175 … page 620
Merritt … page 618
Elias #3031 … pages 617 and 607
Anthony #1545 … page 606
Antony #1535 … pages 417 and 416
Gerrit … pages 414 and 20 (yes, a jump to page 20)
Theunis Eliasen …page 10
You are welcome. I did the work for you of tracing our line back in the book. Imagine the original work of researching all this!
- Pronunciation. It is pronounced as in a scooter, a motor vehicle.
- A note regarding the last name having a space or not between Van and Scoter, as in Van Scoter or VanScoter. I observe both ways. For example, in the last will and testament of John C. VanScoter from 1898, he writes it as VanScoter. However, public notices about John print it as Van Scoter. I think (?) that a space between Van and Scoter is more Dutch, but making it one word is an attempt to further Americanize it.
